It depends on your timing. After 8–16 even taps the average is usually within about one BPM; keep tapping and the result settles further.
You may be tapping every other beat or on both kick and hi-hat. Use the Half or Double button; for most dance music the kick drum gives the right tempo.
Divide 60,000 by the BPM to get one quarter note in ms. At 120 BPM that is 500 ms; a dotted value is 1.5 times, a triplet two thirds of the straight value.
